Frequently asked questions

Is ShotScreen free?

Yes. ShotScreen is free forever with no account. The first 5 screenshots each day are completely popup-free, and after that you can keep capturing with a quick reminder. Every editing and AI tool is included in the free version. ShotScreen Pro is a one-time purchase that removes the reminder for unlimited, popup-free captures.

How much does ShotScreen Pro cost?

ShotScreen Pro is a one-time purchase: $8.99 on the Mac App Store or €8.99 on Gumroad. There is no subscription. On Gumroad you can use the code SHOTSCREEN20 at checkout for 20% off (this discount is Gumroad-only).

What is the difference between the App Store and Gumroad versions?

The app itself is the same. Two differences matter. First, only the Gumroad version includes ShotScreen Cloud uploads and the optional Cloud Plus plan with screen-recording uploads; the App Store version uses imgbb for image uploads instead. Second, the SHOTSCREEN20 20%-off code only works on Gumroad. The Gumroad version updates via Sparkle; the App Store version updates through the App Store.

What is ShotScreen Cloud?

ShotScreen Cloud is optional hosting for your shared screenshots and recordings, available in the Gumroad version. ShotScreen Pro includes 10 uploads with 35 MB of total storage. Cloud Plus (€3.50/month) raises that to 5 GB and 100 uploads, and adds screen-recording uploads (mp4, mov and gif). Every share has an expiry time you choose, an optional password, and can be deleted individually or all at once. Raw files are served from a separate domain, shotscreen-usercontent.com.

How do I take a scrolling screenshot on Mac?

macOS cannot capture a scrolling page on its own, but ShotScreen can. Press ⌘⇧3, pick the window or area, and ShotScreen scrolls the content automatically while showing a live preview, then stitches everything into one tall image. There is also a manual mode for tricky pages. Full walkthrough: how to take a scrolling screenshot on Mac.

Does the AI run locally, or in the cloud?

Locally. Text and QR recognition, background removal and image upscaling all run on-device using Apple Vision, BiRefNet and Real-ESRGAN. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no account, and there is no tracking. See the privacy policy for details.

Which macOS versions does ShotScreen support?

ShotScreen runs on macOS 13.0 (Ventura) and later, on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Microphone recording requires macOS 15.0 or later.

Can ShotScreen record video or make a GIF?

Yes. ShotScreen records an area, a window or the full screen to MP4 (H.264, hardware-encoded) with system audio and, on macOS 15+, microphone audio. You can trim the clip with draggable in/out handles, adjust playback speed, and export the recording as an optimized looping GIF.

Can it recognize text (OCR) and QR codes?

Yes. Press ⌘⇧T to run text recognition on any capture. ShotScreen uses Apple Vision for accurate OCR and also detects QR codes and barcodes, copying the result straight to your clipboard.

Does ShotScreen work with multiple monitors?

Yes. A pixel-perfect crosshair overlay appears on every screen during selection, and ShotScreen handles mixed-DPI setups (a Retina display next to a non-Retina one). It can also stitch all your monitors into a single image.

Can I remove the background from a screenshot?

Yes, on-device. ShotScreen removes backgrounds using Apple Vision for speed or the BiRefNet Core ML model for higher quality on fine detail like hair. No internet connection or account is needed.

Can I upscale a low-resolution image?

Yes. ShotScreen upscales images 2×, 4× or to a custom width using Real-ESRGAN, running locally on your Mac. A before/after slider lets you compare the result against the original.

What editing tools are included?

A full markup editor: pen, highlighter, lines and arrows, shapes, text, callouts, labels, blur/pixelate to redact, and a magnifier. It also supports crop, resize, rounded corners, a 3D perspective tool that can tilt the whole image or a single layer, and a layers panel for composing shots.

What is the stash?

The stash is a floating gallery that holds your recent captures in a masonry grid. It survives restarts, so screenshots stay put until you clear them, and you can drag any item straight into another app.

How is ShotScreen different from CleanShot X?

ShotScreen is a one-time purchase rather than a subscription, and its AI (background removal, upscaling, OCR) runs entirely on-device. It also has a 3D perspective editor and a manual/auto scrolling capture. See the full CleanShot X alternative comparison, or the best screenshot app for Mac round-up.

Do I need to create an account?

No. ShotScreen has no account and no sign-in. The Gumroad version verifies your Pro license key with Gumroad, and the App Store version is licensed through your Apple ID — but there is no ShotScreen account to create.
